Born in Magog, Québec in 1957, Richard Désilets studied music composition at the Université de Montréal with Serge Garant from 1982 to 1987 (bachelor and master's degrees). He is now pursuing a doctorate at the same university.
Richard Désilets was composer-in-residence for the Canadian Opera Company and at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts. He has won several awards, among them prizes from CAPAC, the CBC and the National Tribune for Young Composers of the Événements du Neuf concert society. He has also received grants from Québec Ministry of Cultural Affairs and from the Canada Council.
His researches of new sonorities, musical structures, and rhythms has made Richard Désilets a man of very complex music. His concern is now to popularize his work in order to reach the uninitiated.
