Michael Ippolito is a versatile composer-performer who has collaborated with classical, folk and jazz musicians in performances ranging from experimental improvisation to traditional Klezmer music. A graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, having studied composition with Joel Hoffman and Michael Fiday and improvisation with Alan Bern, he is currently a student at the Juilliard School, studying with John Corigliano. Michael Ippolito began his musical studies in Tampa, Florida, where his first major work for piano and orchestra was premiered in May of 2000 by the Tampa Bay Youth Orchestras featuring the composer as soloist. In February of 2003, his Waltz was premiered by the Florida Orchestra at the University of South Florida's composer showcase. In 2004, his song, Willow Poem, was selected as the best student entry in the American Art Song Competition, part of the San Francisco Song Festival. Also in that year, his piano piece, Blackbird Variations, was recognized by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs in its annual composition competition. Other honors and awards include an Honorable Mention in the inaugural New England String Ensemble Composition Competition and the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, Arts Recognition and Talent Search, Honorable Mention in 2003. In 2005, the Cincinnati Symphony and conductor John Morris Russell commissioned The March of Mad King George for one of the orchestra's Young People's Concerts in November. In 2006, his piano trio, Double Passacaglia, was recognized by the New York Art Ensemble in its composition competition. As a composer, he has presented his music in master classes with Samuel Adler, Kaija Saariaho, Frederic Rzewski, Martin Bresnick and Zygmunt Krauze, among others. As a pianist, he has worked with Maurice Hinson and Lisa Moore. From 2003 to 2008, he has been a participating composer and performer in MusicX, a festival of new music in Cincinnati. In 2005, he attended the "Upbeat Hvar" International Summer School in Croatia and in 2006 he participated in classes at Yiddish Summer Weimar in Germany. In 2007 he attended the Oregon Bach Festival's Composers Symposium as a pianist, composer and improviser. In addition to his composing, he is a frequent performer and improviser as pianist and accordionist and is a member of the Cincinnati Real-Time Composers (www.realtimecomposers.com), founded in 2005.
