Christian Ofenbauer, Professor of Harmony and Counterpoint
Born 24.3.61 in Graz, grew-up in Carinthia, began music lessons at the age of 5 (violin), later studied organ and music theory at the Klagenfurt Conservatory, completed secondary school education in 1979 and studied at the Vienna Conservatory under Herbert Tachezi (organ performance), Alfred Uhl (compositional theory) and Friedrich Cerha (composition), and also studied early music performance practice privately with Josef Mertin; 1986/7 studied in Paris (contact with Pierre Boulez), in 1988 Christian Ofenbauer
was awarded Master of Arts.
From 1982-87 he worked intensively as a composer with the Angelus Novus Theatre in Vienna, (for example, on the music project TOD DES HEKTOR, 1987, performance duration: 12 hours); 1982-7 titular organist at the Vienna Votive Church; 1982-3 member of the ensemble die reihe, (since 1988 also active in programme planning and as theory advisor on individual projects, for example, in 1989 the CAGE Project at the Konzerthaus in Vienna); concerts and radio broadcasts as organist, conductor and composer in Austria and abroad; since 1988 on-going series of lectures on questions relating to modern music in the "Literarisches Quartier Alte Schmiede" in Vienna; 1985-92 worked freelance for the Universal Edition publishing house, Vienna (piano editions).
1999-2000 worked with the Vienna TheaterKombinat, (production of MASSAKERMYKENE at the former St. Marx abattoir, choral work and active as a performer).
Taught at Graz Conservatory, at the Dept. of Applied Theatre Studies at the Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany; at the Vienna Conservatory and at the Mozarteum University, where he was visiting professor of composition from 1994-1997. Since October 2001, Christian Ofenbauer has been Professor of Harmony and Counterpoint at the Mozarteum University. In this latter capacity his main areas of research are interpretation studies and 20th century and contemporary music.
