He studied at Feldkirch Conservatory until 1989. 1989–93 Conservatory and College of Music Zurich: studied recorder with Kees Boeke and Composition with Hans-Ulrich Lehmann; concert diploma 1993. 1992–95 studied composition with Helmut Lachenmann in Stuttgart.
Since 1988 recorder-player in concerts as well as broadcast and CD productions, as well as analysis of historical performance practice (14th–18th centuries). Since 1991 his compositions have been performed by ensembles and in collaboration with important performers specialising in contemporary music in Europe. 1993 lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music; since 1995 artistic director of the festival ‚bludenzer tage zeitgemäßer musik‘; initiated collaboration with Gesellschaft für Musik & Ästhetik-Freiburg to install an international forum for musical-aesthetic discussions on contemporary composition (start 1998).
Co-editor of the series‚ New Music and Aesthetics in the 21st Century‘ (since 2002, Wolke Verlag, Hofheim).
