Garber earned the BM and MM in music composition at James Madison University and the DM in music composition at The Florida State University. His principal teachers were John Hilliard and Ladislav Kubik. Additionally, Garber has benefited from personal insights on composing from, among others, Donald Erb, Libby Larsen, Nancy Van de Vate, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.
Notable performances of Garber’s music include: Three Psalms (for soprano and piano) at Duke University, Resonances (for piano) at Vanderbilt University, James Madison University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Central Oklahoma; “Songs for My God” (a song cycle for tenor and piano) at Butler University and the University of Georgia; Te Deum (for chorus, organ, and brass) by the Salem (VA) Choral Society; Symphony for Winds at the University of Georgia, Arkansas State University (Jonesboro), the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music (San Juan), and the Knoxville Wind Symphony; Concertino by the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; Parabolisms (for alto saxophone and piano) at Converse College, Hamilton College, Syracuse Society for New Music, Memmingen and Darmstadt, Germany; Another Twist (for baritone saxophone and piano), at the Darmstadt Academy of Music.
Currently organist/choirmaster and composer-in-residence at All Saints' Episcopal Church (Morristown, TN), he also teaches music courses at Walters State Community College. Previously he taught (music composition/theory, organ, bassoon) at Carson-Newman College for eight years where he was an associate professor and winner of the excellence in teaching/leadership and creativity awards.
