Information: Born Budapest. Studied composition at the Academy of Music, Budapest, with Viktor Herzfeld, also graduated from the University of Sciences. Having completed his studies, he spent considerable time abroad: viz. In Leipzig, Geneva and Paris. In 1913 he became collaborator and later musical director of the Budapest Ethnographic Museum, and soon emerged as one of the leading figures of the movement folk music research initiated by Kodály and Bartók. From 1919 to 1949 he was professor at the National Conservatory (for same time director of that institute) teaching composition and chamber music.In 1930 he was elected president of ther Music Department of the Comité International des Arts Populaires. He was a member of the artistic and literary committee of the Leage of Nations. In 1955 he became corresponding member of the French Académie des Beaux Arts. In 1929 he was awarded the Coolidge Prize and in 1954 the Kossuth Prize.He composed stage works, coral works (with or without accompaniment), choruses for mixed voices, choruses for female voices with organ, choruses for mixed voices with organ, orchestral music, chamber music, instrumental music (with or without piano), writings. He died Budapest.
