Louis Sauter was born in Rome, New York, on 18 September 1955. He left the USA when he was 5 years old and has lived most of his life in France.
He is a communications engineer, holding a degree from Telecom Paris Tech and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
He began his career doing research in signal processing and multimedia, and then evolved towards managerial functions and consulting. He was the project manager of the Planck HFI Ground Segment, an astrophysics mission whose spectacular results have enriched our understanding of the universe.
During his career, he has sometimes worked in relation with the world of music, most notably as a member of the Scientific Committee of the IRCAM.
Louis Sauter is also an amateur musician: pianist, singer and composer.
His first musical experience was playing the recorder – preferably in the public garden since his performances seemed to disturb the household.
When he was 12, he started learning the piano and has continued ever since, depending on the availability of an instrument. He is still grateful to the music store in Toulon that allowed him to play the piano regularly during his military service! He also enjoys playing with other musicians, accompanying singers or playing chamber music.
He is an amateur singer and was part of the “Orchestre Colonne” choir for several years, performing in Salle Pleyel, the Chartres Cathedral and the Palais Omnisports de Bercy (an audience of over 13,000 people) and for the French television.
In 2012, he resumed composing music – and has now written a number of pieces for piano, voice, chamber ensembles and symphonic orchestra. Several of his compositions have been performed in public, including a suite for symphonic orchestra that was performed in Greece in 2013.
A mostly self-taught amateur musician, he has nevertheless benefited from lessons from professional pianists.
He met Olivier Messiaen several times, and even attended a musical analysis lesson during which the master focused on the Rite of Spring. He is now improving his composition skills with Ricardo Nillni.
