Violist Julia Purgina was born in Straubing, Germany in 1980.
She graduated with distinction from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied viola with Professor Wolfgang Klos and composition with Professors Erich Urbanner and Chaya Czernowin.
From 2002-2003, Ms. Purgina studied viola at the Universität der Künste in Berlin with Wolfgang Knörzer. Ms. Purgina is currently working on her PhD with Professor Martin Eybl, specializing on Aleatory Compositional Techniques.
She has received numerous prizes and scholarships including the Theodor-Körner-Preis, the Gustav-Mahler-Jugendorchester Stipendium, the Viktor-Fohn Stipendium, and the Antonio-Salieri-Kompositionspreis.
From 1999-2004 she was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.
Ms. Purgina played in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2007.
Though her primary focus is on the performance of modern music, she also performs frequently with orchestras such as the Vienna Volksoper and the Tonkünstler Orchester of Lower Austria.
As a composer, Ms. Purgina has had a number of commissions.
She is currently writing a viola concerto to be performed in Germany and Azerbaijan, a string quartet, solo pieces for contrabassoon, cello and viola, and an ensemble piece to be performed in Russia.
Her pieces have already been performed in Austria, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Estonia and Italy. Ms Purgina is a co-founder of ensemble LUX.
