(b Watermael-Boitsfort, Brussels, 17 Nov 1901; d Montignies-le-Tilleul, 9 May 1976). Belgian composer. Essentially self-taught, he began in the early 1930s to develop an individual 12-note style in which series are worked thematically in succession: the absence of formal unity is characteristic, but so is a fixed expressive tone, whether of lyrical pathos or exuberance. His large output includes eight symphonies, concertos, quartets, ballets, choral works and songs.
