Henk van der Vliet was born in 1928 in Rotterdam.
From 1938 till 1942 he had accordeonlessons on the Toonkunstmuziekschool. His first compositions from that time were shown to the director of the musicschool, Willem Pijper. He advised van der Vliet to follow a professional music study muzikale. In 1945 he began his study flute at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Jan van Dijk had the greatest influence on him. Afterwards in 1950 he studied flute with Johan Feltkamp in Amsterdam.
Since 1950 Henk van der Vliet have lessons and played in Rotterdams Kamerorkest. In 1953 he emigrated to Canada where hij flutist was in a military band. In 1956 he returned to the Netherlands. Again he gave lessons, played in the Rotterdams Kamerorkest and took lessons with Johan Feltkamp. In 1961 he moved to Noord-Brabant where hij with his wife (piano) and the celloplayer Jan Wisse as a trio in smaller towns performed.
As composer Van der Vliet is a autodidact. Since 1965 he began regularly to compose, especially for amateurs.
