WILLIAM WALLACE, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. in 1933 and educated at the University of Utah (Ph.D., 1962) and the University of Oxford, with composition studies under Leroy Robertson (Utah), Egon Wellesz, and Edmon Rubbra (Oxford). He was on the music faculty of Rutgers University prior to moving to Canada in 1967, when he took up a position at McMaster University to teach music theory and composition, and eventually, music criticism in a M.A. program he helped found. In 1989, he retired from full-time teaching to devote major time to composition. He holds Canadian citizenship.
Wallace's works, particularly orchestral works, have been extensively performed in Canada, the United States, and to an increasing extent, Europe. His compositional style may be described as consonant and tonal, which features are colored, however, through a predilection for a high level of rhythmic interest accompanied by a frequent use of octatonic scales. A highly personal and recognizable style results, often well-liked by audiences.
